EHV vaccination for mares

EHV vaccination has been a key topic in the UK this year after an outbreak led to the deaths of some horses.  Pregnant mares should be immunized against the abortion strain of Rhinopneumonitis (EHV-1, strain 1) at a minimum of 5, 7 and 9 months of pregnancy.

Biosecurity measures should be increased to minimise the risk of the mares contracting other conditions.  If they are in higher risk of exposure through still competing or living in a livery yard, then immunizing at 3 months may also be recommended by your vet.

Other immunizations such as Tetanus should be given about 30 days prior to the mare foaling due date in order to get maximum antibody levels in the colostrum.
